How to set up a Facebook (Meta) lead-gen campaign

A practical, 8-step walkthrough for generating real leads with Facebook & Instagram ads — the same framework we use for clients selling everything from solar to medical equipment.

Facebook (now Meta) is still one of the fastest ways to put an offer in front of ready-to-buy people. But most campaigns leak money because the foundations — tracking, offer and follow-up — are skipped. Here's the setup that avoids that.

Set up your Business Portfolio & assets

Everything runs through Meta Business Manager (business.facebook.com). Get the assets in one place before you spend a penny:

  • Create a Business Portfolio, then add or claim your Facebook Page and Instagram account.
  • Create an ad account and add a payment method.
  • Assign people and set roles — keep admin access with the business, not a personal profile.

Install tracking (Pixel + Conversions API)

Meta can only optimise for outcomes it can see. Set up tracking so it learns who converts:

  • In Events Manager, create a dataset and install the Meta Pixel on your site (plus the Conversions API for reliable, cookieless server-side data).
  • Define your key event — usually Lead — and fire it when a form is submitted or a call starts.
  • Verify it with Test Events before launch. No working Lead event = no real optimisation.

Nail the offer & audience first

The account setup is easy; the offer is what makes or breaks it. Before building anything, be able to answer in one line each:

  • Who is this for? (the specific buyer)
  • What do they get, and why is it worth their details? (free quote, sample, assessment, discount)
  • Why now? (a reason to act today, not "someday")

Create the campaign

In Ads Manager → Create, choose the Leads objective. Then decide your structure:

  • Start simple: one campaign, one or two ad sets, 2–4 ads.
  • Use a campaign budget (Advantage campaign budget) so Meta distributes spend to the best ad set.
  • Give it enough budget to exit the learning phase — as a rule of thumb, aim for a daily budget that can produce several leads a day.

Build the ad set

This is where you tell Meta what a "win" looks like and who to show it to:

  • Conversion location: an Instant Form (fast, in-app) or your website landing page. Instant Forms usually win on volume; landing pages usually win on quality.
  • Performance goal: maximise leads (and set a cost-per-result cap only once you know your numbers).
  • Audience: go broad and let Advantage+ audience find buyers, or test a lookalike of past customers. Avoid over-narrow interest stacking.
  • Placements: use Advantage+ placements unless you have a specific reason not to.

Create ads that stop the scroll

Creative is now the biggest lever. Give the algorithm strong, native-feeling material:

  • Hook in the first 3 seconds — lead with the problem or the offer, not your logo.
  • Mix formats: short vertical video/UGC plus a couple of strong static images.
  • Write primary text that speaks to one buyer, one problem, one clear call to action.
  • Test 2–4 distinct creative angles, not 4 versions of the same idea.

Capture & qualify the lead

A cheap lead you can't reach is worthless. Build quality and speed into the form:

  • Add 2–4 qualifying questions (budget, timeline, property type — whatever separates buyers from browsers).
  • Include a clear consent / marketing opt-in and link a real privacy policy — essential if you'll call or text.
  • Send leads to your CRM instantly (native CRM integration, a Zapier/Make webhook, or the Conversions API) — not a once-a-day CSV.

Launch, learn & optimise

Resist the urge to fiddle. Let the system learn, then act on data:

  • Expect a learning phase — avoid big edits until each ad set has ~50 conversions.
  • Judge on cost per qualified lead, not cost per click.
  • Turn off clear losers, scale winners gradually (~20% budget increases), and refresh creative before fatigue sets in.

The #1 thing that beats a "better campaign": speed to lead. Following up within 5 minutes can dramatically increase your contact and conversion rates. A fast, average campaign beats a slow, "perfect" one.

Pre-launch checklist

  • Pixel + Conversions API firing a verified Lead event
  • One clear offer with a reason to act now
  • 2–4 distinct creatives, video + static
  • Qualifying questions + consent + privacy policy
  • Instant CRM delivery and a fast follow-up process
